For many people, a day by the water provides a chance to slow down, clear the mind, and escape the pressures of everyday life. At Tackling Minds, we’ve seen first-hand how fishing creates opportunities for meaningful conversations that might never happen elsewhere.

In association with Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Alliance, Tackling Minds were proud to deliver a cancer awareness session at Bay Horse Farm in Horton, Ribble Valley, alongside Alpha Heroes, bringing people together to talk openly about cancer awareness, mental health, wellbeing, and the importance of early detection.

The video captures the spirit of the day perfectly, showcasing how fishing can bring people together in a relaxed and supportive environment while encouraging important conversations around cancer awareness, mental health, wellbeing, and the importance of attending screening appointments when invited.

Why Fishing Creates Safe Spaces for Conversation

Talking about health concerns is not always easy. Many people, particularly men, can find it difficult to discuss topics such as cancer, mental health, or personal struggles. Embarrassment, fear, and uncertainty often prevent people from seeking support or asking questions.

Fishing changes that.

When people stand side-by-side on a lakeside rather than sitting face-to-face in a formal setting, conversations tend to flow more naturally. The relaxed surroundings remove pressure, create comfort, and allow individuals to open up at their own pace.

This is one of the reasons why our fishing sessions are so effective. Angling provides a unique opportunity to improve wellbeing, reduce isolation, and encourage positive conversations in a supportive environment.

During the session, volunteers discussed the importance of looking after both physical and mental health. The conversations taking place on the bank demonstrated exactly why fishing is such a powerful tool for engagement. Whether someone was sharing their own experience, asking questions, or simply listening, the environment allowed people to participate without pressure or judgement.

Raising Awareness Around Cancer Screening

Although fishing brought people together on the day, the underlying message was clear: early detection saves lives.

Volunteers shared personal experiences and encouraged participants to take advantage of screening opportunities when invited. One speaker discussed how skin cancer had been detected early and successfully treated, reinforcing the importance of seeking advice if something does not feel right.

For many people, cancer can feel like a frightening subject. However, avoiding conversations about symptoms, screening, or medical concerns can often create greater risks. Events like this help normalise those discussions and encourage people to seek advice. If something feels new, unusual, or not normal for you, it’s worth getting checked. Visit Act On Cancer for more information.

The message throughout the session was simple: don’t ignore concerns, don’t be embarrassed, and don’t wait to speak to a healthcare professional if you notice changes in your health.

Many cancers are highly treatable when caught early. That is why awareness campaigns like this are so important. By creating opportunities for people to discuss health concerns openly, we can help break down barriers and encourage positive action before problems become more serious.

Mental Health and Cancer Awareness Go Hand in Hand

When discussing cancer, it is important to recognise that the impact extends far beyond physical health. Concerns about symptoms, diagnoses, treatment, or supporting loved ones can all place significant pressure on a person’s mental wellbeing.

Health anxiety is something many people experience, yet it often goes unspoken. Worrying about symptoms or putting off appointments can create additional stress and uncertainty. Through sessions like this, participants are encouraged to ask questions, share experiences, and realise they are not alone.

At Tackling Minds, we regularly see how nature-based activities can help people manage stress, anxiety, and feelings of isolation. As explained on our Why Fishing page, angling offers a unique combination of mindfulness, routine, social connection, and time spent outdoors.

By combining fishing with health awareness initiatives, we can engage individuals who may never attend a traditional support group or wellbeing workshop. Sometimes a simple conversation while waiting for a float to dip can have a lasting impact.

Building Stronger Communities Through Angling

This session is just one example of how fishing can be used as a vehicle for positive change. Whether we are supporting individuals facing mental health challenges, helping young people build confidence through our schools programmes, or working alongside communities to raise awareness of important health issues, our mission remains the same.

We believe everyone deserves access to supportive environments where they feel safe, valued, and heard. Fishing provides exactly that. It encourages people to slow down, connect with others, and have conversations that might otherwise never happen.

Our work continues to expand across the North West and beyond, delivering inclusive sessions that help people improve their wellbeing while developing new skills and building lasting friendships.
